Game Changing Tech: Virtual Reality

With Facebook’s recent $2 billion acquisition of Oculus Virtual Reality, it is clear that I am not the only investor out there who believes that virtual reality is the next game changing technology opportunity.  Mark Zuckerberg said, “Mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow.  Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play, and communicate.”

Virtual reality (VR) or virtual environment (VE) is a computer-generated environment with and within which people can interact.  The advantages of virtual reality are that it can immerse people in an environment that would normally be unavailable due to cost, safety, or perception restrictions.  A successful virtual reality environment offers users immersion, navigation, and manipulation. Virtual reality is going to change the way that people shop for everything.  It will allow you to be somewhere where you are not, which allows you to experience something without having to actually be there.  The possibilities are just so endless that I feel like this is going to transform the retail experience for everything from major purchases to minor purchases.

Virtual reality encompasses a range of interactive computer environments, from text-oriented on-line forums and multiplayer games to complex simulations that combine audio; video, animation, or three-dimensional graphics; and scent. Some of the more realistic effects are achieved using a helmet like apparatus with tiny computer screens, one in front of each eye and each giving a slightly different view so as to mimic stereoscopic vision. The opportunities for this technology to become part of our daily lives are endless.

Currently I am looking to invest in unique virtual reality ideas that aren’t piggy backed off of someone else’s investment.  I want ideas that are unique and are game changers for the way we live.  It is my goal to bring the futuristic concepts of Star Trek to our everyday lives.
